Throughout the journey of entrepreneurship, seeking guidance is inevitable. However, blindly adhering to conventional wisdom can sometimes lead to more confusion than clarity. Let’s explore common advice that may inadvertently hinder your progress and how to navigate through it effectively.
Throughout the entirety of my experience as an entrepreneur, I have come to the realization that when you seek the guidance of other individuals on business matters, you do not succeed in obtaining further answers; rather, you end up with other questions that can lead you to solutions that are utterly incorrect.
If you mindlessly follow general advice, it can cause more harm than good. This is true regardless of whether the advice is being shoved down your throat by your father, mother, preacher, or pals who can’t resist doling out some outmoded morsels.
There is a good chance that the objective is to be of assistance to you, particularly if it originates from individuals who would like that wonderful things will occur to you in the future. Nevertheless, the ability to exercise discernment when it comes to receiving advice is a skill that every individual ought to master because it is an essential skill.
Having saying that, consider the following examples of advice that may leave you feeling more perplexed than you already were.
1. Effort is always rewarded.
One of the drawbacks of working exceptionally hard is that it keeps your mind occupied, which in turn hinders you from taking advantage of the opportunities that are readily available to you in your life. It should come as no surprise that some people spend their entire lives toiling and toiling, yet when the time comes for them to retire, they have very little to show for the many years of hard effort they expended.
Be careful not to be the kind of person that lives like a donkey and then gets left behind when age finally catches up with them. Maintain the same level of intelligence as a horse, an animal that is highly valued throughout its whole existence. Concentrate your efforts on the areas that are most important.
2. Get out of bed earlier.
Every single one of us has a unique pattern of bodily resting. A few people favor getting up early, going to work, and going to bed a little bit earlier than usual. The natural tendency of some people is to get up a little bit later, go to work a little bit later, and sleep a little bit later into the night.
In our culture, those who get up early are praised, while those who get up late are looked down upon. This is because our society does not take into account the fact that each of us has a unique pattern of living. Why on earth would you subject yourself to the torment of waking up early if your brain doesn’t start working until approximately eleven in the morning? Your productivity will suffer, and you will be more likely to develop a wide variety of lifestyle-related disorders if you do not get enough sleep.
On the other hand, the concept that “you must wake up early” should be reserved for slaves who have a responsibility to their owners and for farmers who have a responsibility to the natural world. Your natural pattern should be followed, and you should make the most of it. Maintain your habit of getting up early if you are it. It is not worth tormenting yourself if you are able to improve your performance by sleeping for a few more hours.
3. Obtain a REASONABLE Job
When I was growing up in my hometown, people would immediately question whether or not you had actually completed your university education if you did not have a real career (such as an accountant, teacher, doctor, or pilot). When you tell them that you are engaged in modeling or that you are running an internet business on a computer, they will look at you as if you have just landed from Mars.
We live in a world where people who work as hairdressers make more than doctors, people who work as freelancers online earn more than accountants, and people who work as auto mechanics earn more than engineers. You should not pay attention to anyone who advises you to look for a real job.
If you have discovered something that you are passionate about, something that provides you with a means of subsistence, and something that is providing you with the potential to develop, then you should quit listening to the garbage that society produces!
4. You are not old enough to engage in these activities.
Once upon a time, when I had just completed my secondary school education, my brother hired me as a sales representative and took me into his company. I remember that this happened some years ago. In my job, I was responsible for marketing stationery by going door to door. On the other hand, it would be extremely rare for a week to go by without someone addressing me with the question, “Don’t you think you’re being too young to be doing this?”
Now, to a certain extent, I was on the verge of giving in to their remarks. But they had no idea that I was working at that job in order to increase the amount of money I needed to pay for my education on campus. I did not have the same good fortune as their children, who most likely received ready-made school fees, clothes, and other necessities. I was aware that in order to shape my future, I would need to put in some effort.
That I was prepared to put out my best effort in that circumstance and that I was in possession of an identification card is the most important thing. To my good fortune, I never gave up, and to this day, the abilities that I acquired throughout that period of my life have consistently provided me with a competitive advantage in my life.
Your age, gender, or physical appearance should not be used as a weapon against you. There is no such thing as being too young or too old to dream.
5. If you want to settle down later, make money first.
Some people would advise you to give up everything for the time being and concentrate on the things that are most important to you, such as your education and your profession. But you are giving poor counsel. One can only go so far with the wealth that they possess. There have been instances in which individuals have spent the majority of their youth working for large sums of money, only to eventually come to the realization that they have entirely lost everything in life.
In most cases, they are doomed to a life of loneliness, boredom, and a frigid old age because they have no family to turn to and no more youthful vitality left. It is important to keep in mind that you are a human person and not a robot, despite the fact that you have the desire to make a lot of money at a young age and perhaps reach the highest point in your profession. You don’t want to find yourself in a situation where you have all the money in the world but no love in your life.
In a similar vein, you do not want your own children to refer to you as grandpa when you go to visit them at school, nor do you want your wife to refer to you as a sponsor since you delayed getting married. The Bible, which is considered to be a good book, teaches us that there is a time for everything.
It is a moment to be youthful, full of vitality, welcoming, and friendly, as well as a time to be old, cherished, and unrestricted.
