Our approach integrates high-level policy advocacy and global activism with support and legal advice to grassroots partners and networks, aiming for change at all levels.

About the Solidarity for African Women’s Rights Coalition

The Solidarity for African Women’s Rights (SOAWR) is a coalition of over 70 national, regional, and international civil society organizations working on women’s rights across more than 30 African countries. Formed with the principal objective of advocating for the ratification, domestication, and implementation of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (the Maputo Protocol), SOAWR is dedicated to advancing women’s rights on the continent.

Background

In Africa, significant efforts have been made to ensure that the rights and protections enshrined in regional and international human rights treaties are accessible to all women and girls. While most African countries are parties to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (the Maputo Protocol), there remains a substantial gap between state commitments and the implementation of these obligations. This gap leads to widespread abuses and violations of women’s and girls’ rights.

In collaboration with the SOAWR Coalition and a partnering African University, Equality Now is organizing the 3rd edition of the Africa Gender Equality Moot Court Competition (AGEMCC) from October 2024 to February 2025. This competition aims to bring together participants from across Africa to engage in discussions around women’s rights using both English and French languages.

About the 3rd edition of the Africa Gender Equality Moot Court Competition (AGEMCC)

Since 2020, Equality Now and the SOAWR Coalition have hosted the AGEMCC with the primary objective of enhancing law students’ research, understanding, and application of the Maputo Protocol and other regional and international human rights instruments to advance the rights of women and girls in Africa.

The theme for the 3rd edition of the AGEMCC is “Legal dilemmas of transnational commercial surrogacy in Africa.” The competition will explore the legal intricacies surrounding transnational commercial surrogacy arrangements, focusing on issues such as the sexual and reproductive rights of surrogate mothers, the legal status of children born from such arrangements, and the potentially exploitative nature of the practice.
