ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Internews seeks a Gender and Marginalized Groups (GMG) Advisor for a forthcoming USAID-funded Leader with Associates (LWA) global Internet freedom award. This initiative aims to bolster local civil society, independent media, and human rights defenders in their efforts to prevent and address digital repression. The project will focus on fostering long-term resilience among civil society through a networked approach involving global, regional, and local actors. The GMG Advisor, reporting to the Chief of Party (COP), plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the project effectively integrates considerations for women, LGBTQI+ persons, gender nonconforming individuals, and other marginalized groups.

LOGISTICS

Internews, with headquarters in Arcata, CA; Washington, DC; and London, UK, offers this as a fully remote position, welcoming candidates globally. Applicants must possess work authorization in their current location without requiring sponsorship from Internews. Additionally, while fully remote work is supported in many locations, some may not be feasible.

DAY-TO-DAY TASKS

  • Develop a Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) plan for the project.
  • Oversee implementation of psychosocial support activities.
  • Integrate GESI activities across technical assistance, research, grants, and capacity-building efforts.
  • Build capacity of staff, partners, and project participants in utilizing a GESI approach.
  • Provide guidance on engaging vulnerable and marginalized groups in program activities.
  • Evaluate GESI challenges and draft sub-plans to address concerns.
  • Prepare communications materials highlighting the project’s GESI approach.
  • Review program documentation for gender sensitivity and inclusivity.
  • Lead research on the impact of Internet freedom issues on women and marginalized groups.
  • Identify GESI indicators and measurement methods for monitoring and evaluation.
  • Foster relationships with GESI stakeholders within the Internet freedom and civil society sectors.
  • Contribute to Internews’ GESI culture through participation in related activities.

QUALIFICATIONS WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in human rights, gender studies, development, or related fields.
  • Minimum 10 years of related work experience advising donor-supported programming on gender and marginalized groups.
  • Expertise in gender and marginalized group issues, particularly in internet freedom-related programming.
  • Experience in developing and delivering GESI-focused content and assessments.
  • Familiarity with USAID-funded projects and GESI analyses.
  • Proficiency in research, data collection, and analysis.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to navigate politically sensitive subjects and diverse stakeholder relationships.
  • Willingness to travel internationally, up to 15% of the time.
  • Fluency in English; proficiency in a second language preferred.
  • Experience with project management tools such as Airtable.
